What You Say Is What You Get®--What is Really Going on for Leaders in Our Economy?

HI Everyone,

It's been awhile. Sorry. Travels and computer crash.
But of course, still thinking about leadership and the economic recovery, every day.
Many in the media, as they all have jobs, do not have a clue how tough it is on small business owners. And in NYC and DC, where they congregate, economies and real estate values are again on the rise. Not true out here in the SW!

As the recovery grinds along with the only real uplifting factors due to other economies than the U.S., this means the lessons here have not been learned. The real issue, as I discuss in depth in my book From Old Power to New Power – Which Leaders Will Survive?, now out in a 5cd album, is not greed. Shocked? Let's think it through further. Yes, greed wreaked havoc, the gov't, Wall Street firms, home buyers, Freddie and Fannie, mortage brokers, and living beyond their means, all contributed.

But greed is not the cause of this leadership and economic debacle. It is the symptom, not the cause. The real underlying cause is how power is used and abused, authoritarian, "my way or the highway, I will do what I want regardless of the consequences" attitutes. When leaders or institutions or individuals make decisions based on fraud, create derivatives with air under them, buy what they cannot afford, and make other choices that are harmful.

The poll numbers show that people do not accept this type of leadership any more. They have had it. They actually want representation! Breath of fresh air. I am delighted but surprised that this Power Shift from Old to New Power described in my book hit the political world this soon. I thought for sure it would take longer, and predicted in 2006 when starting the book that Old Power leaders would destroy their firms and their careers, which we have seen. I must confess though that when those words came onto the page, I blanched. Could it really be so severe? But it felt right to leave them on the page. Little did I realize how prescient my words were.

Now, I analyze all leadership behavior in terms of power--how do they use power?
Obama ran on the promise of New Power but turns out to be Old Power. Scott Brown is clearly New Power, explaining why he won a long-Democratic seat. Certainly it was not his conservative platform but his New Power leadership process!

Michael Steele's emails sound very much Old Power.
Palin's speeches demonstrate New Power in her process.
Many corporate CEOs sound like New Power when they serve on leadership panels, yet some are still using Old Power in their companies. The big banks, Chrysler, and GM were all Old Power, which is why they crashed. Ford is moving to New Power, thus survived w/out govt. funds. I realize that you have heard me say this before, but think of it now from where we are, not really recovering in the U.S.

Banks are recovering only a little, and the traders are not taking such far reaching risks, they have learned that much. Has their leadership approach changed? Time will tell. Certainly the lack of communication--the black hole-with customers who need help with mortages is Old Power, pennywise and pound foolish. It will cost them many customers in the future.
Try watching the news through this lens of power, see what you learn. Old Power leaders just want power, to grow their own power and their domain's power, just feathering their own nests. New Power leaders want to bring great results for all involved including themselves, more collaboration, less adversarial behavior.

Seven Powerful Leadership Lessons From the BP Oil Spill

Predictions about BP Oil Spill:
Predicted the morning they deployed top kill it would fail. It did.
Predicted current cap strategy would have only modest success. True so far.
Intuition says the final solution will involved some sort of cascading strategy with different mechanical levels involved and that a French scientist working on it will have a crucial key.

Seven powerful leadership lessons call to us from the BP oil spill in the Gulf!
What can we learn from this tragedy?
1. The more risk you have and the more groups involved, the more you put systems
in place to inspect, check, re-check what is going onin great detail. This applies to any part of life, health, environment, business,relationships, spiritual life, workplace issues, and everything else.
This is no time to hang out in la la land. Get into the nitty gritty. BP registered in the Marshall Islands
and not the U.S., thus the last inspection was 2005. If registered in the U.S, would have more frequent inspections.
2. Working in very difficult circumstances, do not assume you
can easily fix what crises may erupt. Be prepared for a tough
long haul once a crisis erupts. Have a plan! Be clear on what success will look like.
(I have this in my Strengths- and Success-Based Positive Planning Manual for clients.)
3. Understand that everything is interconnected, all the companies,
employees, fisherpersons, tourists, government, leaders, etc., and
what you are doing when you work in a risky situation can and will
impact a huge array of stakeholders. Think about this in advance.
(I have helped many clients shift from crisis management to this planning ethos.)
4. Because of #2 and #3, do scenario planning IN ADVANCE for
what might happen and pre-test your solutions so you can mitigate
the negative consequences for all involved when the crisis comes.
5. Make sure the leaders involved can communicate consciously and with empathy,
not just facts. Make commitments in tough times with absolute congruence
between words and nonverbals. (I have worked with many leaders on this.)
6. Understand that however upsetting, as Americans you can bet that
we will make sure some good comes from this no matter what!
7. Spiritually, everything happens for a reason and there is always a higher
positive purpose, so stay tuned and look for it. Be careful not to
send more negative energy or judgment into the Gulf, but send
them positive thoughts of healing for people, economy, creatures, environment.

New Tech Companies--Old Power Leadership

Hi Everyone,

The great upset about Facebook and privacy is causing an uproar, and rightly so.

Nothing online is private but I completely agree. No trust, no business!! Customers should have the
right to choose how much they want public vs. private!
As an economist & leadership power expert, I have been disappointed to see that the heads of the big
tech. firms tend to unilateral power grabs over their customers while creating the image
of being cool and having young employees and open cultures. Microsoft started it of course, being the
800 lb. gorilla, had to be stopped by the govts in US & Europe. Still putting out half baked products
so customers are forced to assume the costs to make it right. Huge losses for small business owners
Amazon did that with requiring all its sellers to use their book printer, who wasn't that great; Google did it trying to put all authors books online for free without their consent and had to be stopped by lawsuits (always remember one of the founders is Russian!), Apple is trying to do it by censoring any apps by people who say anything negative--fair criticisms by professionals, not loony personal attacks--about the CEO.
Now Facebook. Amazing, these great companies with young founders using the same old authoritarian male model trying to control us as customers/sellers. Yawn. What part of It's America We Get the Freedom to Choose don't they understand? If they had great leadership they could do so much more. Just beware--and vote with your dollars! Customers hold power--be sure you use it well and wisely!

Is this a reflection of Obama's leadership style? Pretending to be collaborative positive New Power but really being authoritarian? Or are they like this anyway?
The weirdest thing to me: Inside the companies people love to work there, their ideas are
encouraged, you can work weird hours, dress way down. They hire the best and the brightest. They pay well.Google feeds you organic food, even! But they treat us customers like sheeple. Go figure. That
lack of integrity will always come back to bite them over time. For years Microsoft stock traded stuck
at 28 or below, now only up to 30 due to Windows 7. What goes around comes around.

Authoritarian Power Marches Onward- What You Say Is What You Get®

Sometimes being a leadership power expert can be extremely frustrating, leaders will be most successful by using new power in New Power countries, and Old Power with Old Power countries. Yet here we have a US president doing precisely the opposite.

At home, he is using authoritarian old power forcing us to purchase a certain item or be fined for not doing so.

Yet with old power nations, who scoff at positive collaborative New Power and regard it as a weakness to be manipulated, he is using collaborative new power.

Being a lady prevents me from using the language of my MILITARY OFFICER FATHER, needless to say this power is precisely backward from what it should be.

For a while I thought his entire first year focused on health care was a misstep. But now I realize it was a very precisely crafted Old Power strategy to control us. By gaining control of health care and student loans he has control over major segments of the population.

Strategies always reveal goals. Had he wanted economic recovery as his first priority, he would have put jobs first. Clearly not a fan of the private sector as we see repeatedly from his statements he put private sector jobs last, low on the list. He sent stimulus money to states to keep or expand government jobs.

This large expansion of government control is not accidental, we know from his comments on the health care bill that he feels justified passing legislation, he will sign legislation even though it is unpopular, not taking the will of the people as the first order of business.

How much control will he take over the banks? The housing sector? By waiting so long to help small business in any way he delayed innovation and creativity, even green companies, who could not get loans.

At first I thought he was making mistakes from inexperience in an executive role. Now I realize his actions are carefully calculated in accordance with his goals.

Time to speak out! It is all about power. We need leaders who can effectively use New Power here at home and New or Old power effectively abroad, as circumstances require.

God help us all.

Good News Risky News for the GOP-Obama's Old Power Onslaught-What You Say Is What You Get®

HI Everyone

Good News:

Obama's Onslaught of Old Power authoritarian my
way or the highway behavior re: Health Care Bill is resulting in more
voter awareness, Tea Party demonstrations, and far more
negative press. People are seeing the threat to us.

He is revealing his true angry Old Power true leadership stance. Charlie
Rangel told a Republican Rep. a year ago that they would push the
health care bill through no matter what.
Fewer people are fooled.
He is mobilizing the people against the way he uses power, not just
against the bill.

Risky News:

Our freedoms to choose are at risk.
Obama's Onslaught has the power of the majority party,
and he is determined to use any means to get what he wants
regardless of what the people want.

As the Tea Party is wise enough not to create a 3rd Party,
the pressure now is ALL on the GOP to present
New Party candidates who not only are conservative but
who deeply understand the Power Shift to New Power
that voters are demanding. Even Scott Brown does
not fullly realize that it was his New Power leadership
process, not just his conservative platform, that elected him.

Before, politics was Old Power.

That is no longer acceptable to the people. There is
no longer any trust of established politicians, as they
are perceived as Old Power, out for themselves but not for
constituents.

Post Scott Brown, politics has changed. Brown brought the
Power Shift from Old to New Power, shaking up politics.

Unless ALL GOP 2010/2012 candidates understand this and have
training in how to lead/communicate as New Power leaders,
the GOP is still at risk as a Party and is leaving our
nation at risk for the worst disaster you and I have
seen in our lifetime. What You Say Is What You Get®!

The opportunity is huge to move our country forward.
The risk is huge if the GOP does not do this right."

Old Power, New Power, Obama, and the Banks

HI Everyone,

Why are the banks not lending now that things are better?

One of the greatest bottlenecks and frustrations in the
economy now is the banks not lending. A Congressman from
IL states companies in his state with orders on their books
cannot get funding to produce the products to fill the order!
This is nuts!

The issue is, why?
What has scared them into holding onto all the capital they
have and lending much less than before? Even after they
have paid back TARP money? Why would they give up the
additional profits from lending?

The underlying reason is Obama's use of Old Power attached
to TARP funds. Obama is assuming he has the right to expand the right
of the Federal government to control banks even after they have paid back TARP funds. This would frighten any industry. Old Power always scares people into self-protective choices even if those choices are not the most profitable!
Banks are no exception. They are in survival mode like many other industries
and small businesses. Until this changes, they will not lend, which will
continue to slow/dampen our economic recovery.

Our banks are at the core of our economy. As long as they do not feel
safe to lend, the rest of us business owners and leaders won't feel
safe to expand. Trust is everything.

What You Say Is What You Get(R)--Leadership Culture, Corporate Culture and Political Leaders

HI Everyone,

So sorry for my silence, Cox employee error disabled my internet forever, they had a hard time figuring out how to fix it. Techno-nightmare. But I am back and I have things to say!!

Leadership is the cause and cure of everything! Someone told me this--very powerful.

Leaders face the toughest challenge ever--right now!!

What do you think about corporate leaders' awareness of the lessons from the economy?
Other than the traditional layoffs and cost-cutting, do you think leaders understand
the real meaning? What types of corporate culture are leaders building now? How well is that working?

Right now smart leaders are nervous because the ground is shifting
under their feet. Do they know why? The underlying cause of all this difficulty, with real unemployment beyond 20%? Do you? No, it's not just the greed.

It's all about how power is used--the Power Shift from Old to New Power. Old Power, my way or the highway, is under siege in the U.S., in business, in politics, at home, at work. Everywhere.

What does this mean? What is New Power? Positive collaborative, and open and inclusive. Highly skilled, not armchair psychology. The only form of leadership the best talent and Gens. X/Y will tolerate.

This creates a huge challenge for leaders steeped in Old Power, like Bob Nardelli of Home Depot and Chrysler, as Old Power leaders will harm their careers and take down companies.

Yes, Wall Street firms and GM too, all Old Power firms. In trouble if still alive.
This Power Shift affects all leaders. Whether you like it or not, it marches on.
And now it is hitting politics. Bayh stepping down. Palin stepping up. Brown winning Kennedy's longtime seat, a New Power leader in his position and process. Both traditional parties are of course Old Power. Tea Party members criticize both parties. Voters resent the back room deals and the lack of focus on jobs. Guess what this is about?

Not bi-partisanship. Not Democrats, not Republicans. It is about the Power Shift from Old to New Power. People are demanding it. From both parties. Obama is not focused on what matters most--jobs--he did so too little to late. He decided-Old Power--that the agenda was health care. Upset many, as he campaigned under a New Power image, which is why he won.

Old Power used internally in New Power countries will always cause disruption and backlash. They may not know this framework but those no longer supporting Obama
are reacting to how his administration has used power in ways that has not helped.
