What are the five qualities every leader must have in their followers/employees? And why?
How do your followers/employees rate?
Many client executives have anguished over employees who were just not getting the job done, with products late to market, teams not working well, upsets and conflicts derailing progress, or just poor communication causing poor results and many needless weekends at work.
Many of my consulting projects have focused on this issue. How about you?
* How happy are you with your employees?
* Are they working positively, quickly and accurately, with great teamwork, responding well and quickly to changes??
* How can you hire better employees, who are dedicated to the mission of your firm?
Thinking the the power of employees to make or break your business,
* What makes a great follower?
* What are the qualities you want in those you hire?
* What are the five qualities every leader must have in their followers/employees?
Using dance as a metaphor for leading and following, I examined the parallels to leading and folowing in business.
I often get positive feedback on how well I follow, and the leaders I dance with say I make fast intricate complex moves so easy and fun for them.
Thinking about the power of great followers in business, I started analyzing what makes a good follower, a follower that leaders want to lead in dance or in business?
Here are the results of my analysis of client comments and experiences and feedback on my dancing.
1. Great followers work at it....they are committed and intentionally pitch in and give it their all. They don't just sit back and wait for the leader to do all the work.
Application: In a hiring interview, ask yourself is your job candidate interactive, or just passively answering your questions?
2. They bring positive energy to each meeting or dance.
Application: Great followers smile, are enthusiastic, come ready to be good and do good.
In dance, they smile and bring good energy, adding to the dance, not being passive and dragging down the energy.
How high is your Positive Quotient®, or your PQ?
3. They pay close attention with total focus. They are totally present in the moment.
Application: I am watching every thing the leaders do and everything I am doing in response...their arms, their core, their leg and foot position, their speed of direction change, their lead hands and fingers, their facial expression, constantly looking for clues
about what they are doing so I can respond collaboratively and FAST.
In business, notice who is present, attentive, focused on the task, engaged, asking questions.
4. They keep up to speed on the external environment to understand the context of the business.
Application: Great followers keep up with their industry and company events and news and the macro-economic environment.
I do this for clients and when dancing keep a very close ear to the music, bass and top lines, moods, speed, rhythm breaks, syncopations, and lyricsso I can "dance the music" with each partner.
5. They invest in their competence and skills as a top priority, always learning, growing, and getting better at what they do, valuing their own talent development, so they are good at what they do.
Application: Leaders invest in employee development in high-impact ways, bringing in top experts with real-time applications, not just off the shelf cookie cutter basic courses, and great followers eagerly attend and apply what they learn. When I work with consulting clients, my training programs always include
real-time customized application to save clients time and money and improve results.
There is an entire literature on the Learning Organization, showing better results from better learning.
And how about you?

For Positive Leaders: What You Say Is What You Get®--In a Crazier World, Get Saner! Do the Math!
Welcome, Leaders,
The external environments for your companies seems riskier and crazier every day.
More negative factors, dangers and risks seem to steal your time and your profits.
Political events, violence, weak unprotective leadership, out of control illegal unethical behavior, weak economies, and business-unfriendly policies are have reached the point of insanity.
These conditions frighten you and your employees, understandably so. Only those in
a fog of denial are not smart enough to be scared...they are choosing numbness.
Yet you still have the responsibility to lead your company and inspire greater results.
How do you circle the wagons, how do you give your employees a greater sense of protection and possibility for greater innovation and results amid the craziness?
Starting as an Economist before becoming a Behavioral Scientist and Change Leadership expert, I fell in love with Math, head over heels, at the University of Chicago. There was no going back...from then on, I always think mathematically.
Thus: Since the external environment is putting more negative factors into your company,
you need to balance this with more positive factors just to stay even, and then more positive factors to gain a net positive balance psychologically.
This is of course challenging but essential to master, a skill all leaders need to survive. This
does not mean whitewashing issues of course, but it does mean mastering seeking, creating, standing for, and commenting on positive factors in your company, with great skill, from the heart. Your job as leader is to make sure you and all the other leaders in your company have the skills and consistency to do this. This will be different in different firms, of course, one size does not fit all.
It is easy to get caught up in giving more attention to negative factors, but ignoring the need for positive factors to balance your firm's culture and psyche will work against you.

To be a truly powerful leader, you need to master the positive deeply and systematically. Only this creates a real-time collaborative culture unleashing the best talent and managing risks as quickly and effectively as possible. Employees don't speak up if they are afraid of their bosses. Recently I gave some very clear positive feedback to a fellow entrepreneur (not a client) and he deflected it! He did not see or own his own greatness!
As a result he is not taking advantage of expansion opportunities for his firm.
This sparked reflections on my client executives, most of whom have been brilliant, highly educated at top schools, leaders in their fields and very successful.
What have they taught me about strengths as a leadership focus? When I began my appreciative leadership work, no one else was doing this and there was no research to guide my Ph.D. dissertation, so clients became guideposts.
1. They usually do not see or under-see their strengths and greatness in depth, compared to what I see in them.
2. They are uncomfortable discussing strengths and do not know how to until they have learned my business-friendly language system for this.
3. They have no idea how much money they leave lying on the road from not seeing/applying strengths to their bottom line systematically in all leadership behavior.
I saw this when starting my positive strengths-based leadership work and was, and still am, amazed.
How can this be? How can these best and brightest not see their best? Excutives have often been surprised that I can see their strengths quickly when they cannot, even though they have worked together for years!

I learned that the culture rarely supports discussing strengths and greatness in depth.
As a result, we have massive under-use of strengths because so few are really seen and applied via all leadership behavior systematically.
This means lower profits, more stress and struggle and a lot less fun!
After all, what resource is more crucial for business success than your leadership team's strengths?
Even companies assessing strengths do not have an integrated set of strengths-based leadership systems to apply strengths to the bottom line, starting with a road-tested Engine and Four Wheels strengths communication system.
There’s a saying: "An opportunity sustains an enterprise for a year; good management sustains an enterprise for a decade; good corporate culture sustains an enterprise for a century."
How clear is your company's culture about basing success on strengths?
How deeply do you and your team see strengths?
How thoroughly do you have comprehensive systems in place for strengths-based leadership?
Only have you have done both well can you maximize success, profits, and keep the best talent!
One of my first client teams increased revenue by 35-40% in just a few months using this approach!

This time of year, we complain about taxes, and in this environment with good reason!!
We may not be able to control taxes but we can control our own "taxing" behavior.
As I have observed over 1000 leaders and their businesses for over 30 years, I have had many chances to
observe leaders adding to or subtracting from their bottom lines.
What are the three things leaders do that stand out to strengthen or tax/weaken their profits?
The answers may surprise you!
Tax #1. Lack of systematic positive leadership culture. First and most costly, leaders who do not have a consisten, systematic, positive leadership culture are leaving lots of lovely money lying on the road. Upsets, misunderstandings, mistakes, disengagement and delays plague them until we get it turned around. Caught in the usual problem focus, they do not even realize the costs they have been paying until they see the results of positive changes, e. g. increased revenue 35-40% in a few months due to fuller awareness and use of strengths combined with quality management.
To avoid paying this tax and create more profits: Install a consistent positive leadership culture in all aspects of leadership in your company,
to save time and money and increase profits.
Tax #2. Ignoring issues, not dealing with them, not paying attention. Result: A $1000 problem becomes a $1,000,000 problem, they get bad press, lose their best talent, have higher costs, and lose revenue as employees do not raise issues early when they see leaders ignoring them. One CEO even lost his business by doing this...talk about risky "taxing" behavior!!
To avoid paying this tax and create more profits: Face up to issues, encourage your employees to raise them by creating a culture where this is rewarded not punished, and most of all, model the behavior!! The tougher the issue, the sooner you face it!
Tax #3. Not keeping up, staying stuck in old leadership power models. Many executives do not realize that the employee landscape has changed dramatically...the old authoritarian models of leadership just don't fly with Gen X and Y. Employees expect aware positive collaborative leaders who understand and are skilled at the use of positive collaborative shared power and the exponential and profitable benefits it brings when used well.
Yet I still hear many complaints about negative bosses. Yes, the new models of power do require learning, but they are all learnable skills...I always tailor my consulting to the clients' individual styles so that learning is faster and easier for them and applied immediately to their tasks and projects, for learning positive systems for planning, delegation, startups, endings, teams/meetings, change, M&A and more....
To avoid paying these taxes and create more profits: Stay updated on new positive collaborative leadership power systems. See this as a systems issue, not leaving it to the personality of each leader in your firm, a common taxing error, but creating a systems-based positive leadership culture and behaviors for every leader so you have consistency and thus credibility with employees, customers, alliance partners, etc.
Many studies are now showing the power of the positive approach for your bottom line. One example: The % of positive statements in planning meetings at 60 companies correlated 100% with their profitability...the more positive statements, the higher the profitability!! (Univ. of Michigan, 2006)

The Passing of a Great Leader & the Dance of Leading and Following--5 Keys
Hello Everyone!
Welcome to this What You Say Is What You Get® Positive Leadership Blog!
First, a tribute: I want to honor and remember the one mentor who appreciated my pioneering work on appreciative leadership when I began and no one else appreciated my work--he was brilliant, loving and wise and saw the scope of what I started beyond my own vision at the time...he recently passed and I am so grateful to him and so sad.., Dr. Warren Bennis, famous, wise, caring, and brilliant leadership professor, author of 30 books and hundreds of articles, consultant to U.S. Presidents and CEOs, on all the major business media.
He stood for the highest values in leadership, was the President of the University of Cincinnati and Professor of Leadership at USC in their business school for many years. A tribute to him was published by Forbes.
I was honored to know and care for him and receive his caring brilliance for many years. He did
the foreword for my book, From Old Power to New Power--Which Leaders Will Survive? and a testimonial for my earlier book What You Say Is What You Get®: The Secret Language of Great Business Results.
I am sad to lose him but honored to have known him...it was crucial to have someone of his wisdom believe in me when I started my work which was the opposite of the "what's wrong with you" approach of all my other mentors!!
In this blog post: A Rare sneak peek at leaders from a follower-What makes a great leader, a poor leader?
How do you rate on these 5 criteria for great leaders, as seen through the eyes of a follower?
Recently at a large dance convention, as a follower (lifelong dancer, highly trained), I analyzed many leaders and how they led. As an expert on how leaders use power, I see the parallel to how you lead in your business or job, so read very closely! This will give you some powerful keys to lead better !
These are the keys to great leaders, those leaders who gave me the most enjoyable fun and powerful dances.
Notice that in all cases great leaders have a high Positive Quotient®--they bring positive energy and positive skills!
1. Have invested in great training, have skills in both leadership and dance (=their business), know what they are doing, not just street dancers, they know how to dance with followers without hurting their shoulders, arms, back, wrists, etc., do not throw followers off-balance.
2. Have a clear lead and frame (=business framework and leadership methods) during the dance (their meeting, business).
3. Show great connection with follower, pay close attention to the music and the followers. (Focus on associates, listen well, know what they are doing, respond to the external environment quickly and collaboratively.)

Welcome to this What You Say Is What You Get® Positive Leadership Blog!
First, a tribute: I want to honor and remember the one mentor who appreciated my pioneering work on appreciative leadership when I began and no one else appreciated my work--he was brilliant, loving and wise and saw the scope of what I started beyond my own vision at the time...he recently passed and I am so grateful to him and so sad.., Dr. Warren Bennis, famous, wise, caring, and brilliant leadership professor, author of 30 books and hundreds of articles, consultant to U.S. Presidents and CEOs, on all the major business media.
He stood for the highest values in leadership, was the President of the University of Cincinnati and Professor of Leadership at USC in their business school for many years. A tribute to him was published by Forbes.
I was honored to know and care for him and receive his caring brilliance for many years. He did
the foreword for my book, From Old Power to New Power--Which Leaders Will Survive? and a testimonial for my earlier book What You Say Is What You Get®: The Secret Language of Great Business Results.
I am sad to lose him but honored to have known him...it was crucial to have someone of his wisdom believe in me when I started my work which was the opposite of the "what's wrong with you" approach of all my other mentors!!

How do you rate on these 5 criteria for great leaders, as seen through the eyes of a follower?
Recently at a large dance convention, as a follower (lifelong dancer, highly trained), I analyzed many leaders and how they led. As an expert on how leaders use power, I see the parallel to how you lead in your business or job, so read very closely! This will give you some powerful keys to lead better !
These are the keys to great leaders, those leaders who gave me the most enjoyable fun and powerful dances.
Notice that in all cases great leaders have a high Positive Quotient®--they bring positive energy and positive skills!
1. Have invested in great training, have skills in both leadership and dance (=their business), know what they are doing, not just street dancers, they know how to dance with followers without hurting their shoulders, arms, back, wrists, etc., do not throw followers off-balance.
2. Have a clear lead and frame (=business framework and leadership methods) during the dance (their meeting, business).
3. Show great connection with follower, pay close attention to the music and the followers. (Focus on associates, listen well, know what they are doing, respond to the external environment quickly and collaboratively.)
4. Bring good positive energy and also build on the positive energy of the follower, create synergy in the dance (business), 1+1=15. Smiles! Thank followers for the dance (business efforts).

Three Powerful Positive Leadership Lessons for You from the Superbowl!!
Hello, Everyone
A dear friend once inspired me to say for the first time ever, "only depth gives you freedom". He replied: "Whoa, that is profound!" He saw that only depth frees you to be, do, and have the best in your life...yet very few business owners and leaders work in depth...most think they are too busy! Big mistake!
Looking more deeply than the plays and the scores, what about the Seahawks allowed them to have the freedom of creating a walkaway win over the Broncos and the first Seattle Superbowl championship ever?
Three Powerful Seahawks Leadership Lessons:
1. A spiritual foundation: Quarterback Russell Wilson said it first every time he spoke: Thank God...he is clear he is on a spiritual mission, not just in a game or a business.
2. Positive mindset--the Seahawks has a passionately powerful mindset and focused on being Champions starting over a year ago...and kept to this vision passionately! This bonded them together more tightly as a team!
3. Positive supportive collaborative coaching by Pete Carroll, in a very usual style, more emotional, supportive and player-centered. Chaos, Order, Power and Leadership
HI Everyone,
Wow, putting on my Economist and Leadership Power expert hats, I am watching the two steps forward one step back in the Power Shift from dictatorship to democracy ( my latest book, From Old Power to New Power--Which Leaders Will $urvive?)...tough going right now...vicious circle...poor economic growth opens the door for dictatorship which then weakens economic growth! Seeing it here and home and abroad...very sad...tough lessons to be learned in many countries.
But, hey, Egypt, how could you possibly think Mursi would be democratic? His pronouncement of his absolute power is in exact alignment with the beliefs of his party. This was obvious before your 2012 election. Hope this works out well for you there...would be good to have you as an ally again.
Here in the U.S., we see fruits not growing to ripeness:
-Our GDP was lowered by a huge 33 % from 2.4 to 1.8% for 2012, now the same as Russia.
-A poll reported 44% of Americans are worse off economically than a year ago.
-The markets dropped like a rock at the hint of "tapering" by the Fed.
-Top line revenue for corporate earnings has been nothing to write home about.
-Job formation 188,000 this week is only half of what we need to get back on track.
-Small business formation and job creation, usually creating 2/3 of our jobs, is at the lowest level in 30 yrs.
-I know many entrepreneurs with great products, technology and services who cannot get startup funding even in cities which are rebounding...not a good sign..in fact, a very bad sign.
On this 4th of July, my prayer for our great if beleaguered nation, is that our economy strengthens,
more jobs are created, our Constitution and spiritual foundation are honored again and the innovative
spirit of America flourishes in business once again!!

No Change-Why Would You Expect It? Leadership Lessons Post-Election
No Change-Why Would You Expect It: Leadership Lessons Post-Election
I cannot imagine why anyone thought Obama would move more centrist after
the election? Why should he? From his authoritarian power perspective, he
got what he wanted. Why should he compromise just to strengthen our economy?
Is that even his goal? From his behavior, clearly not. In my behavioral science/leadership world,
we say that if there is a gap between word and deed, the deed is the truest measure. Remember what I said before: Leadership behavior reveals TRUE goals, not necessarily stated goals.
Unbelievable that the markets shot up on news of a minor deal with the major issues not addressed yet.
Short-term traders, clearly. The long term risks have not been abated and are growing. My colleagues who trade options are not touching this!
Remember the debt ceiling deal he had with Boehner for 800B$ of new revenue which we walked away from after it was agreed to, coming back with a demand for $1.2 Trillion in new revenue, a FIFTY percent increase? Not the behavioral pattern of a centrist. Brinkmanship with our nation's strength? No problem for
anyone who wants power more than our good.
Tragically the Republicans were not strong enough to combat the very nasty campaign
which was predictable from previous behavioral patterns. So we are headed towards the European model,
which as we see has failed in Europe. Their socialist path has created so much scarcity that they are
in a constant power struggle, who will have control over the banks, who will make the decisions, how will the profligate children be brought into line.
Germany with the most hardworking capitalist model is being punished the most severely, expected to rescue the profligates. Again my favorite Economist joke: "The problem with socialism is that you run out of other people's money." The illusion in the U.S. that Europe is more stable is just that. Nothing has changed...the serious problems are just delayed further, as here in the U.S. And I repeat: Any social system which punishes the best and incentivizes laziness will fail of its own economic weight. Only a vibrantly growing private sector can help the U.S. and Europe now. Where is the support for that? I don't see it. Big mistake in policy. Huge.
A colleague recently said to me, "I am tired of hanging back. Time for me to "man up" materially and spiritually." National leaders could benefit from his advice.

The Most Powerful Leadership Choice in Decades...the U.S. Presidential Election
Hello, Everyone,
As Europe hesitates and delays progress with its internal power struggles, inevitable with socialism as the more and less fiscally responsible countries try to find a fair solution when there really are none
due to the extremes of Greece, Spain, etc., I turn my attention to the U.S. election.
As the U. S. is increasingly vulnerable to the same issues as Europe due to the current administrations
ideology and authoritarian domestic leadership style, this election is the most important in a very long time.
As an expert in leadership styles, I found both debates to date to be very telling.
In the first, Obama was disengaged, unprepared, inarticulate and a clear loser. He did not care enough to prepare and is used to being the whole show, so his weakness in collaborative process was glaring. This is typical of authoritarians. Romney was the clear winner, strong, articulate, prepared, authoritative, presidential, powerful yet statesmanlike.
The V. P. debate was also revealing..Biden's rudeness, smirking, constant interrupting, was amazingly condescending and again, authoritarian, a national embarrassment. Not the least statesmanlike. As one commentator said, it is frightening to think of having his finger on the nuclear button! In 30 years of working with senior executives, I have never allowed this behavior in any of my client teams.
The only good thing about Biden's behavior is that so many women, one radio show host said, were switching to Romney/Ryan based on Biden's behavior. This is of course predictable, but clearly Biden did not care about the women's vote...a strategic error to be sure. The deeper issue though is how his behavior reveals his character.
I have wondered all along why they couldn't get things done in DC...it is of course up to the President to make sure that parties work together, the buck stops at the White House. Now I see why. Obama either does not care or lacks the skill in collaborative process. But even if he lacks the skill, he has access to experts if he really wants to lead and get things done.
The Libya situation, not taking briefings in person, just on paper and the lack of leadership--choosing to be the abdicrat-- with all energy campaigning also reveal character and priorities. The rest of the nation hangs in the balance, with even top CEOs afraid to commit to expenditures/investments due to fear. The recent market rally had little volume. Large firms are sitting on $1.7 trillion in cash! Investors are sitting on the sidelines. Small businesses cannot get funding....I have spoken to at least 10 this week!
Bottom Line: I have never seen so much fear, despair and frustration as I see expressed toward this administration in the business community....everyone I speak with is in fear or despair, and I gravitate to positive can-do professionals!
Wake up, America! We can still get back on track, although it will be challenging. Please vote for
the only candidate who has a clue about business and economic realities---with Romney and Ryan
we have a chance. Otherwise, our entire nation is at risk economically, psychologically and spiritually.

European crisis and the markets rally??? Really?
HI All,
Watching Europe and the markets' irrational exuberance after Draghi's offer, then of course all the ongoing power struggles between ECB, national leaders and the people rioting...This is all about who has the power (see my book on Leaders and Power below), and the markets keep reacting as if one leader's pronouncement will fix things. But the EU was put in place without sufficiently clear agreements on consequences, so now they are in the midst of a power and money crisis, PLUS having to build the car as they drive, while their people are rioting. And the markets rise? Really? They did finally come down a little, and a few Wall Street commentators do see the real picture.
Any short term fix will not fix the underlying "cultural" (read, behavioral) situation.
The real issue is that socialism creates immature dependencies and that since it is not economically viable, the rude awakening felt by the people is a demand on them to grow up and become more independent and self-sufficient. Work. Pay taxes. Don't expect to retire at 50. The basics of growing up. Here we see that old Psychosocial Maturation Stages Model I mentioned before:
Interdependence Highest
Independence
Counterdependence
Dependence. Lowest
The riots are counterdependent, of course, the upset of being yanked out of dependency. Adolescent rebellion. Expect more. Tough to give up the gravy train! But so much tougher to keep it!
Remember my favorite joke going around in Economist circles: "The problem with socialism is that
you run out of other people's money!!"
As I said in my last post, Germany, the best and most capitalistic, is being punished, and the profligate countries are being rewarded. Any social system which punishes the best will fail, as the worst performers will bring it down. USSR, anyone?
Growing up is tough, but without it, no nation can survive.
I have the same fears about the U.S. Frightening!
Europe could not be giving the world a more graphic lesson in the failure of socialism.
I pray that our own leaders....and voters in the U.S....wake up and see this in time!!

Did Draghi do everything needed as he promised?
HI Everyone,
OK it has been three weeks since Draghi said he would do whatever he could...now let's see...the next day Spain was making contingency plans in case it left the EU. Recently the head of the Dutch Socialist Party said the EU might break up...the Socialist party??!!! Finland is thinking of leaving the EU. And of course the Bundesbank objects to the ECB bond purchases as it should...Greece is having the next deadline with its usual financial crises.
What part of behavioral science don't they get, as they focus only on the financial aspects? This situation is totally backward. In any ethical responsible social system in which good results are desired over the long term, good behavior should be rewarded and bad irresponsible behavior should be punished. Rocket surgery this is not.
But in the EU so far it has been just the opposite. So-called "profligate countries" are being rewarded for bad behavior (except for minor sacrifices) and good countries--here, hardworking Germany--is expected to take the punishment for the behavior of the "bad" countries. Upside down and backwards from the behavior needed for desired results! Why should Germany be punished for its own good behavior?
Add to this that European banks are more leveraged and more thin on capital reserves than U.S. Banks, and this stew will not turn out to taste savory but bitter.
Any system in which the best are punished and the worst rewarded is not only unsustainable... it is sick!
Why? Because such a system incentivizes the worst behavior which will expand and choke out disincentivized good behavior and ultimately sink the entire system...like Communism in Russia
which I predicted years before the wall fell.
Again, my favorite now-tragic but real current Economist joke:
"The problem with socialism is that you run out of other people's money."
Wishing them all the best in Europe but fearing they have placed themselves in an impossible position.
Hoping and praying we can pull our own nation...the U.S. back from the perils of this brink also... we are at a crisis of trust in leaders due to the socialist policies here...I have never seen so many in fear and upset and despair as I have during this administration....

What can Draghi really do in Europe?
Ok, so today Draghi says the ECB will do whatever necessary to save the Eurozone.
Really? Just one tiny problem. Yes, the Dow rose over 200 points. But if you will forgive my non-original phrase, it is "irrational exuberance'! Why? Because the fundamental problem is behavioral, and the financial problems are a symptom of that, not the cause. And Draghi cannot change behavior. Until the citizens choose governments of fiscal responsibility and take some on themselves...it will still be, as it has for over 2 years...(sorry...but sadly still true)...kicking a now even larger can down the road.
As an Economist and Behavioral Scientist/Leadership Expert of 30 years, I see clearly that if a critical mass of countries like Greece don't want to work, don't want to pay taxes, and yet still expect their governments to nanny them cradle to grave...the simple question is: Where is the money coming from?
Their expectations and demands...the people...are simply unsustainable. The bankers can do what they like but if people don't want to work and pay taxes, the underlying behaqvioral problem of dependency will continually cripple Europe.
It is laudable to try to save the Eurozone in some ways...but the model of Germany working so other countries don't have to, as one commentator said this week...is so unfair it is a brutal manipulation of hardworking Germany, economically and psychologically. Kudos to Merkel for standing her ground, but the situation is still fragile.
Any time you have the weaker punishing the stronger, this will fail...not sustainable economically or psychologically. The therapist Fritz Perls said the underdog always wins (by manipulation)...let us hope he is wrong in this case, but for now, tragically, he is right so far. The profligate nations have no right to
bleed dry the hardworking successful nations.
Of course, all of this also applies to the U.S....a struggle for survival....more on this later. I fervently hope that voters see all of this in the fall here. But at least a much higher percentage of us pay taxes and our retirement age is higher than in Greece!

Banks, Power and Chicanery-Rate Scandal
HI Everyone,
Hope all of you in the U.S. had a good Independence Day...now Interdependence Day as the world grows smaller.
Once again we see leaders using power in authoritarian non-transparent ways--manipulating the LIBOR rate on which so many transactions are based. Barclays, long respected British bank, has admitted it and several other banks are involved including U.S. Banks. How implicated is the Fed? Time will tell as the investigations proceed.
The misuse of power by "leaders" is at the root of all of these scandals, and reflects the surfacing of Old Power behavior no longer acceptable. Barclays, for Heaven's sake! Look for more such scandals to be unearthed. The Power Shift from Old to New Power, which I discuss at length in my book From Old Power to New Power – Which Leaders Will Survive? is at the crux of global change. Countries in which negative controlling unethical authoritarian power is allowed to persist will see weaker economies and reputations due to misuse of power.
Yes, this has been around forever. Yes, it has been a "privilege" of "leaders". But the world has changed.
Information is everywhere and democratized, raising the expectations of transparency and ethical behavior from those with power. Many leaders still behave as if they could control all in secret, but those days are over. Time to change and move into a more positive collaborative participative framework as my mentors, my generation of professionals and the newer generations of consultants teach...In business, unilateral power is over. Give it up. It is obsolete. Besides, New Power is more fun and much more profitable! Scandals are EXPENSIVE!
In politics, the power issues are being played out around the world. Egypt is in the grips of a battle between 2 Old Power factions, so they are in real trouble whichever one wins there. Freedom will be hardwon and delayed for them.....watch this going on in every dictatorship...China, Iran, Syria...in different ways...the Old Power model is being challenged. An amazing time and a compelling saga!
This underlies the huge mistrust of leaders now, by the way...standards have gone way up! Leaders, your required learning curve now is huge. If you do not learn the Power Shift skills and techniques, your career and company are at risk. Plain and simple.

Obama's Leadership Style--An Unusual Combination!
This week I have been observing Obama's leadership style from the view of a leadership style expert for 30 years, Economist, Applied Behavioral Scientist and Change Leadership Expert, and it is fascinating.
At first during the 2008 campaign he came across as positive and collaborative, but something inside me didn't trust it.
Then when he came into office he showed up as an abdicrat, abdicating his promise and most important responsibility to create jobs.
Then his process for passing health care legislation was textbook authoritarian, crammed in at the last minute with only one visit to Republicans in which he mostly lectured. This has turned out to be his predominant style.
I have worked with many authoritarian leaders but have never seen this combination of abdicrat-authoritarian. And have never seen an authoritarian leader who could present as a collaborative leader.
Most unusual. And so are the results. Authoritarians create fear. Abdicrats create fear, anger, orphan syndrome, and divisiveness, all of which we are seeing hugely.
I have been seeing how much fear he has created in consumers, in CEO's, in small business owners, in investors. There is great fear in the land, more than I have ever seen, people are afraid to take a risk on anything. I wondered if any of the financial gurus saw it also...then yesterday on one of the business channels a guest commented on precisely this.
Talking with a colleague this morning, I mentioned to her how unusual it was for an authoritarian to present as any other style--usually they are blunt-and she mentioned he was raised by his grandmother in a time when women had to use indirect means to get what they want instead of asking directly. True? I don't know. But this I know..his psychology is harming us economically and badly, and this is in addition to his policies which also harm us. Make no mistake, the fear and lack of confidence are just as costly as the policies....please give thought to this!!!

World Economic Uncertainty and Leadership Delegation
HI,
After my last post, I was thinking of the stress on leaders with all the uncertainty
and how stressimpacts cognitive functioning and communication.
As a longtime expert in leadership communication,
I have seen nearly all clients struggle with delegation.
Now of course it is even more difficult.

One of the most crucial aspects of leadership communication is delegation.
How is delegation working in your company, large or small?
Are you getting the results you want from delegation?
Do you have Delegation Disasters or Delegation Delight?
Do you understand how your use of power affects your Delegation results?
Do you see how great Delegation is crucial for change and transformation?
Most leaders have no delegation training sufficient to handle the rapid change, uncertainty, global shocks and upsets rocketing through their companies.

Memorial Day and Leadership Power, Old and New!
HI,
On this Memorial Day I am grateful that we still have some freedoms in our great but beleaguered nation and grateful for all those who serve, have served and have given their lives for our heraldic country. I hope to see the day when war has become an obsolete function but as long as we have brutal dictatorships we have to be prepared to stand for freedom and democracy, as brutal dictators scoff at anything collaborative like negotiations...a very sad time now in the Power Shift from Old Power to New Power in the political realm. Ultimately the New Power will prevail but right now it surely looks like a step back doesn't it?
More progress is being made in business, as more employees expect positive collaborative power and will leave if not managed this way as soon as they can find another job. In early 2012 I saw on cnnmoney.com a study finding that 90% of employees would leave if they could find another job!! Scary indeed for companies.
Are leaders getting this?

Watching Leadership Power Patterns
Picking up the blog after a time away working on projects and writing several books and training manuals.....
Watching the takeover by Old Power-negative unilateral power type groups--in countries where there was a naive hope about democracy spreading...these countries have eons of history
in which dictatorships were the norm...this will not therefore be an easy Power Shift, but the Shift from Old to New Power I discuss in my book cited below is inevitable...a question of time.
Right now it looks like 1 step forward, 3 steps back, but the Power Shift slowly marches forward..
savvy leaders make sure they understand this and are prepared, because in the U.S. employees
expect New Power and will leave when they can find another job if you permit your managers to use Old Power...remember the study that shows 90% of employees will leave if possible..

After Bin Laden, how do we strengthen our economy?
Hello!
Bin Laden is gone, sigh of relief! Part of the Power Shift I discuss in my latest book...But don't get comfortable! Remember his stated goal:
To bankrupt the U.S.A.!
We are again transferring huge wealth to the Middle East via high gas prices which funds terrorism! Just when we are barely recovering and vulnerable with our debt. No accident!
So I am challenging you: What are you doing to prevent economic harm to the U.S.!
It will take all of us!
What am I doing???
1. Working on funding for a company strengthening our energy independence.
2. Working on funding and consulting for entrepreneurs who can grow their companies and U.S. jobs with new technologies and products.
Why am I doing that instead of my usual corporate consulting?
Corporate earnings are primarily from other countries, emerging markets, meaning few U.S. jobs. It is good they are bringing revenue, but the entrepreneurial sector is really what will save us and grow our economy again. This is my passion!!
So...what are YOU doing to strengthen our economy??!!
It will take all of us, but WE CAN DO THIS!

Leadership--The Power Shift in Business and Government!
Hi,
The last few months have been a great study in leadership power, illustrating the ongoing Power Shift From Old Power to New Power facing every leader I explain in my book Author of From Old Power to New Power – Which Leaders Will $urvive?
In business, a recent study on CNN/Money stated that 84% of employees are looking for a new job and will leave when they can find one, up from 60% last year!! Staggering numbers, imagine the losses for leaders/organization when jobs return. Right now many are forced to do the work of 2 for the price of 1 (Old Power, fear they will lose their job if they don't do this),
and are not well led/managed and cannot grow in their careers.
This is a volcano waiting to explode. Only New Power positive collaborative leadership systems are sustainable in keeping the best talent and creating a climate for great innovative profitable ideas. This saves much time and money and creates better results, e. g. increasing revenue 35-40% in a few months in a technology firm, creating a great success in a merger frought with disaster potential -the much loved leader who did not get the CEO job had a heart attack when he was notified! This only took a few months.
The influence of the Tea Party in the November elections clearly shows a demand for greater participation and representation, more New Power leadership processes, based on the expectation of collaboration, the right to make input and be heard. The Obama administration was perceived as Old Power, interesting since his campaign rhetoric was New Power which got him elected. But the Old Power (authoritarian) approach he used in the Health Care Bill really
caused a large backlash, as Old Power usually does, and we see it now challenged in the courts.
Lesson: It is not just platform but leadership process which influences those governed, or in business, employees. Great New Power leadership requires both platform and process, not just platform. Both are crucial. Only the positive is a foundation for sustainable leadership. Negative Old Power leadership always crashes and burns. Don't let this happen to you or to your company! Let us lower your risk and increase your chances of success!

What You Say Is What You Get®--What is Really Going on for Leaders in Our Economy?
HI Everyone,
It's been awhile. Sorry. Travels and computer crash.
But of course, still thinking about leadership and the economic recovery, every day.
Many in the media, as they all have jobs, do not have a clue how tough it is on small business owners. And in NYC and DC, where they congregate, economies and real estate values are again on the rise. Not true out here in the SW!
As the recovery grinds along with the only real uplifting factors due to other economies than the U.S., this means the lessons here have not been learned. The real issue, as I discuss in depth in my book From Old Power to New Power – Which Leaders Will Survive?, now out in a 5cd album, is not greed. Shocked? Let's think it through further. Yes, greed wreaked havoc, the gov't, Wall Street firms, home buyers, Freddie and Fannie, mortage brokers, and living beyond their means, all contributed.
But greed is not the cause of this leadership and economic debacle. It is the symptom, not the cause. The real underlying cause is how power is used and abused, authoritarian, "my way or the highway, I will do what I want regardless of the consequences" attitutes. When leaders or institutions or individuals make decisions based on fraud, create derivatives with air under them, buy what they cannot afford, and make other choices that are harmful.
The poll numbers show that people do not accept this type of leadership any more. They have had it. They actually want representation! Breath of fresh air. I am delighted but surprised that this Power Shift from Old to New Power described in my book hit the political world this soon. I thought for sure it would take longer, and predicted in 2006 when starting the book that Old Power leaders would destroy their firms and their careers, which we have seen. I must confess though that when those words came onto the page, I blanched. Could it really be so severe? But it felt right to leave them on the page. Little did I realize how prescient my words were.
Now, I analyze all leadership behavior in terms of power--how do they use power?
Obama ran on the promise of New Power but turns out to be Old Power. Scott Brown is clearly New Power, explaining why he won a long-Democratic seat. Certainly it was not his conservative platform but his New Power leadership process!
Michael Steele's emails sound very much Old Power.
Palin's speeches demonstrate New Power in her process.
Many corporate CEOs sound like New Power when they serve on leadership panels, yet some are still using Old Power in their companies. The big banks, Chrysler, and GM were all Old Power, which is why they crashed. Ford is moving to New Power, thus survived w/out govt. funds. I realize that you have heard me say this before, but think of it now from where we are, not really recovering in the U.S.
Banks are recovering only a little, and the traders are not taking such far reaching risks, they have learned that much. Has their leadership approach changed? Time will tell. Certainly the lack of communication--the black hole-with customers who need help with mortages is Old Power, pennywise and pound foolish. It will cost them many customers in the future.
Try watching the news through this lens of power, see what you learn. Old Power leaders just want power, to grow their own power and their domain's power, just feathering their own nests. New Power leaders want to bring great results for all involved including themselves, more collaboration, less adversarial behavior.

It's been awhile. Sorry. Travels and computer crash.
But of course, still thinking about leadership and the economic recovery, every day.
Many in the media, as they all have jobs, do not have a clue how tough it is on small business owners. And in NYC and DC, where they congregate, economies and real estate values are again on the rise. Not true out here in the SW!
As the recovery grinds along with the only real uplifting factors due to other economies than the U.S., this means the lessons here have not been learned. The real issue, as I discuss in depth in my book From Old Power to New Power – Which Leaders Will Survive?, now out in a 5cd album, is not greed. Shocked? Let's think it through further. Yes, greed wreaked havoc, the gov't, Wall Street firms, home buyers, Freddie and Fannie, mortage brokers, and living beyond their means, all contributed.
But greed is not the cause of this leadership and economic debacle. It is the symptom, not the cause. The real underlying cause is how power is used and abused, authoritarian, "my way or the highway, I will do what I want regardless of the consequences" attitutes. When leaders or institutions or individuals make decisions based on fraud, create derivatives with air under them, buy what they cannot afford, and make other choices that are harmful.
The poll numbers show that people do not accept this type of leadership any more. They have had it. They actually want representation! Breath of fresh air. I am delighted but surprised that this Power Shift from Old to New Power described in my book hit the political world this soon. I thought for sure it would take longer, and predicted in 2006 when starting the book that Old Power leaders would destroy their firms and their careers, which we have seen. I must confess though that when those words came onto the page, I blanched. Could it really be so severe? But it felt right to leave them on the page. Little did I realize how prescient my words were.
Now, I analyze all leadership behavior in terms of power--how do they use power?
Obama ran on the promise of New Power but turns out to be Old Power. Scott Brown is clearly New Power, explaining why he won a long-Democratic seat. Certainly it was not his conservative platform but his New Power leadership process!
Michael Steele's emails sound very much Old Power.
Palin's speeches demonstrate New Power in her process.
Many corporate CEOs sound like New Power when they serve on leadership panels, yet some are still using Old Power in their companies. The big banks, Chrysler, and GM were all Old Power, which is why they crashed. Ford is moving to New Power, thus survived w/out govt. funds. I realize that you have heard me say this before, but think of it now from where we are, not really recovering in the U.S.
