How High Is Your Appreciative Quotient®, or AQ? The Dance of Leader and Follower--Trust and Collaboration at Work, How High Are Yours?

What You Say Is What You Get® Series from Dr. LInne Bourget MA MBA Ph.D.

As things open and we can dance again, I an resume by book on the dance of lead and follow as it relates to business, especially the leadership power of the value of trust and positive collaboration.

My recent showcase dance prep and performance included these parallels to business leadership:

1. My teacher and partner accepted my choreography, from trust established over years, as he taught

me I could choreograph. He clearly said what he liked, mostly all, from 5 dances, and in a

few places said he didn’t hear the music that way or thought a change would bet better...

he was right every time..power of a pro! we were not afraid to push back

on each other to get the best results...better outcomes! Can your executive teams do this well?

2. I completely trusted him to fall back into his arms for a low scoot along the floor after 4 fast spins.

In fact, I trusted him so much to catch me that I asked him to give me a bit more space for my arm

lines during those spins! This team trust was built over years. Do your teams trust you this much?

3. I trusted him to hold or balance my weight for leveraged moves. The moves he changed or

added were ideal in helping me achieve my goals and showed me off better especially the split at the end which was pain-free...not bad for a boomer, he knew I could do it!

4. I appreciated his challenging me to think further, as I had asked him to push me and demand

more of me, which he did...the split at the end was his idea, easy and pain-free,

to my pleased surprise. Great leaders show you you can do more than you thought. I

love doing this for client executive teams, great that he did this for me.

5. Seeing two places I wished I had done arm lines better, I am eager to improve for the next

performance, expanding my view of the choreography I had started for the next showcase and

what more I want to include. The quest for better performance! My participation in the choreography

increased by commitment to improve after the joy of getting great feedback on my performance.

6. My facilitation, consulting, listening and feedback skills strengthened our partnership...fun to apply them to dancing!

How About You?

**How successfully do you work with your employees/followers?

**Do you create challenging, creative, fun, collaborative experiences?

**Do your employees keep growing and adding expertise?

We can help you raise your Positive Quotient or PQ and Appreciative Quotient®, or AQ?

Dr. Linne Bourget's What You Say Is What You Get® Positive Leadership Blog August 2019--Five Keys to Leaders’ Standing Out As Winners,The Dance of Lead and Follow

Welcome to Dr. Linne Bourget's What You Say Is What You Get® Positive Leadership Blog

August 2019--Five Keys to Leaders’ Standing Out As Winners...The Dance of Lead

and Follow, How It Relates to Executive Success

Recently I attended and danced at a convention featuring professional and amateur competitions
in swing, country and ballroom dance.  I danced with both amateur and professional leaders,
and watched amateur and professional competitions and performances.

I had a front row seat right on the edge of the floor, so saw everything up close. Dancing with
and watching the pros inspired me to up-level my dancing too!

For Leaders:
What were the most powerful differences between the pros and amateurs?
What sets the pros apart in their dancing, competition and performances?
These are the top 5 keys that stood out boldly:

1. They give more of themselves, putting out much more positive energy, enthusiasm, and smiles.
Research shows that this  works better for business leaders also, especially for motivating
higher performance and retaining great talent.

2. Their moves are stronger and more expansive...they use more of the floor! In business, this means
going for more growth and expansion, knowing they have the skills and technique to do so successfully.
I enjoy dancing with pros as they are not afraid to move out and know how to do so!

3.They can change directions from one move to another much faster and more cleanly and
precisely. In business, leading nimble change is essential for success in the turbulent global market.

4. They challenge themselves more, doing more advanced moves requiring greater co-ordination, skill,
technique and strength.Where amateurs did one or two spins, pros did 6 or 8 spins, or more!
(Although I did not compete, I can do 8 fast spins.) They can do this because they all keep training with other top professionals to increase their skills!
They invest in themselves for greater success.

5.The connection between leader and follower(executive and employee) was much better...they were
much more tuned into each other for the fast complex moves that determine whether or not they win.
This is an exact parallel to what executives are facing now in the global market.

Both leaders and followers and the quality of connection between them were crucial for success.
The best male pro placed second because his partner was not following at his level even though
they live in the same city and dance together all the time.

The couple who won had the best leader and follow connection and I saw them correct before making mistakes. His partner amplified his leadership and improved their dances too! She matched him
very well even though they live in different cities and do not dance together all the time.

Ask Yourself:

How well do you lead with these 5 keys, based on your strengths?

If you cannot lead your own strengths, how can you lead others’ strengths?” Dr. Linne’s Positive Power Quote

If I interviewed your employees, how would they rate you on these 5 keys?
How often do you invest in your leadership skill to improve in these 5 keys?

"The greatest challenge is taking complete responsibility for your own greatness."
Dr. Linne's PoweQuote

Great leaders invest in their ongoing development to lead more positively and powerfully
from their own strengths and greatness. How about you? We are here to help!

Wishing you peace and prosperity!!
I appreciate your positive leadership!

Two Types of Leaders, Which Succeeds? Which Are You? What You Say Is What You Get® Positive Leadership Blog from Dr. Linne Bourget,

Welcome to the powerful What You Say Is What You Get®: Positive Leadership Power Blog from Dr. Linne Bourget, M.A., M.B.A., Ph.D.

August, 2018  Two Types of Leaders--Which One Succeeds? Which One Are You?

HI Everyone,

Reflecting again on the dance of lead and follow as a business metaphor, I see two types of leaders in my dance world, and they have very different effects on followers (your employees).

What are these two types of leaders?
What effect do they have on followers?
Which is more successful? Which one are you?

These two types of leaders are:

1. The Pattern Leader
leads followers (your employees) through his same patterns over and over regardless of the song.  The song represents your external business environment, your industry and global market. He may give me a few beats to improvise, but it is his habitual dance, not our dance.  These are amateurs, without professional training. They are not committed to getting better, only go to lower level workshops, do not get private lessons, and are mostly just there socially.

He does not dance differently from song to song, and misses the rhythm breaks, phrasing, and mood changes in the song. I.e. He misses the shifts in his external business world, and does not flexibly adapt to them, a weakness in the fast global economy, and more traditional, less transformational.

What is the impact on me as follower (your employees)?

Some of the patterns are fun and challenging, yet I get bored by the same patterns and the lack of responsiveness to the music, which limits my creativity and musical expression, as I was trained to dance the music (respond to the external business environment quickly and creatively). I do not get to use as many of my skills and am frustrated and disappointed from our not succeeding in dancing to the song (innovating real-time in your business environment).

2. The Collaborative Leader.
These leaders are trained from early on to be more collaborative and dance to the music.  They hear changes in the music and dance to them, while making a great connection and time for the follower (your employees) to join them in creative interpretation, in the moment, to the song, I. e. Respond to the business environment quickly and creatively. They transform the dance (business) experience by their quality of collaborative leadership.

They are professionals, and even the collaborative amateurs who do not teach and compete in dance for a living do much better in their competitions.  They are judged on teamwork and creative improvisation to the song, and are serious about getting their training to be able to dance at this level. They are constantly taking private coaching and working on their leadership skills, so they are far more successful in competition (marketplace competition for your business).

“The ability to create is the ability to adapt.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

My teacher/showcase partner and I were both trained this way, so we dance this way.  We have some patterns, they always fit the music, and the rest we create together to the song in the moment. This flexibility requires training, skill, a great connection, and awareness for both leaders and followers.

What is the impact on me as follower (your employees)?

Collaborative leaders are much more fun, ask me to step up to a higher level of performance, which I enjoy, and call for using more of my strengths, skills, and extensive training. This also inspires me to get more training, to be better! Never a boring moment!

We both have greater satisfaction and success in responding to the music (external business environment) in the moment, and creating moves we have not done before (fast innovation is crucial in the global market). Note that although I am a boomer and he is Gen X, our style is preferred by Millenials in business, as it is more creative. At the same time we honor the discipline of skills and training, technique and connection to support the creativity.

These are all learnable skills, and leaders must learn them to succeed in this turbulent constantly-shifting market.
Every day is a new song. How well do you dance to the music?

Which type of leader are you, a Pattern Leader or a Collaborative Leader?
How do your employees view your leadership approach?
If I interviewed them confidentially, what would they say?
How quickly and creatively do you lead your employees to respond to the changing business environment?
How successful and timely are you innovations?

“This is what freedom is all about - a chance to be better.” Albert Camus

We can help you learn these skills quickly and easily, based on identifying and applying your strengths and greatness. (I am just finishing my Owner's Leadership Manual for my Strengths Awareness System.) This is the fastest, most powerful and most fun foundation for stepping up to the music with better results, fast!

I appreciate all of your positive leadership!
Peace and Prosperity,
Dr. Linne

Welcome to the short powerful What You Say Is What You Get® Positive Leadership Power Blog
for Feb. 2018, from Dr. Linne Bourget, M.A, M.B.A, Ph.D. , Appreciative Leadership Trailblazer!

How High Is Your Appreciative Quotient®, or AQ, as a Leader?

Now that we are launched into our 2018 goals, and since it is Valentine's week, it is a great time to checkon your Appreciative Leadership Power skills!

*How often do you appreciate those who work with you?
*If I interviewed them, how would they answer this question?

As I often say, giving Appreciation helps you as the giver as much as it does the receiver, for it keepsyou focused on the positive in your business and associates.

Always be sincere and specific so you are a credible feedback giver!

Research shows that people remember the negative more than the positive, so repeating the positive helps anchor it!

But research also shows that positive companies are more profitable, so giving appreciation is a good investment!

In my recent showcase dance with a national champion, I learned that great leaders also need to learn how to leadnew things and need appreciation even though they are highly skilled top-notch professionals.  I thought I was the one who needed to learn as I am experienced but still an amateur, but he needed to stop and figure out how to lead a sequence we had never done before, so it was an "aha" moment, as I thought he already had it down.

Leaders need appreciation too! I appreciated him often!

President's Day is coming up...send appreciative thoughts to the President too...toughest job on the planet, especially now!

"Whatever you appreciate, appreciates."  Dr. Jean Houston

I appreciate all your positive leadership!
Peace and prosperity, and Happy Valentine's Day
