Blog, January 2020--What Power Do You Bring to Your Goals?
How successful were you in achieving your 2019 goals?
Every year in January I recommend reviewing your strengths and successes to fuel
momentum and success for setting and achieving your New Year’s goals. Please do that
for 2019 and 2020.
Working on my leadership manual for Executive Teams’ creating Positive Cultures,
I include a section on how leaders use power and what forms of power are most successful,
one of the special areas of expertise from my Ph.D. and 30 years of consulting.
Although I was laughed out of the room for my Positive Leadership approach when I began
it on an intuition, researchers and businesses are catching up with me, showing that
consistent positive power works better than old-school fear-based power.

The Power of Energy, the Energy of Power
I know a dance studio co-owner, teacher, international competitor and performer who
consistently puts more enthusiasm, vibrant power and energy on the floor than anyone
I have seen in this entire city. Observing him through my professional eyes, I saw that
he gave more of himself than others, and that the energy he gave was powerful and fun,
creating more energy around him.
The studio is growing fast, very successful, as they have a positive culture. When I talked
with him and appreciated his giving so much of himself and his power, I mentioned that
I could see it came from the heart. He lit up from having that recognized, and said
“Yes, I love it.” He loves what he does and lets it show.
What is the key? He allows himself his full positive power and generously shares it
with others!
The more positive power and energy you give to others, the more you will energize
success in your business goals. A CEO of three companies, meeting me for the first time
in California, said to me, “I want to bottle and sell your energy!”
A senior executive client said to me, “I want you at our 3-day off-site meeting even if you
do not say a word. With your energy, we will all do better.” Of course I did facilitate,
as they were working on key changes, but his comment revealed the power of energy
and the energy of power in business. The head wealth adviser in a financial firm,
in our first phone conversation, said, “I love your energy!”. We had not even met!

l How much consistent positive power and energy do you bring to achieving your leadership

l How generous are you in sharing your consistent positive power and energy with your
employees, colleagues, associates, and customers?
l How high is your Positive Quotient®, or PQ?
Inconsistent positive communication, negative communication, blaming, threats,
or not walking your talk (saying one thing, doing another), and negative surprises
will always harm your results and drive out great talent. Research shows that the
number one cause of failed change (growth, expansion, improvement) in companies
is leaders not walking their talk. Leading people, hit or miss always misses!

Leaders face many challenges, and consistent positive power is essential in creating
solutions with their teams. Teams look to leaders for guidance not only on what to do
but how to react to these challenges. Your employees will reflect your quality and quantity
of energy.
